Vallabhadeva Verse 1 commentary continued (line 3-6)

We continue our slow journey through Vallabhadeva’s comment to the first verse. I found the next few lines a lot easier, so hopefully things will speed up from here on afterwards. I have highlighted the translations. Please feel free to suggest more elegant solutions. As well as suggesting the correct solution for line 4

L3: कीदृशेन– kīdṛaśenaby means of what kind?

kīdṛaśa = mf(ii Gr.)n. of what kind? what like? of what use? (inst, s, n)

L3/4:  कान्ताविरहगुरुणा प्रियाविरहदुःसहेन ।

kāntāvirahaguruṇā priyāvirahaduḥsahena

whose separation from beloved is difficult to bear (i.e) whose separation from a wife is difficult to be borne

kāntāvirahaguruṇā = bahuvrīhi – whose separation from beloved is difficult to bear

kāntā = beloved one (f)

          virahaguṇita mfn.  increased by separation

viraha =separation (m)

guru = difficult to bear  (n, s, inst) – here declined like masc. guru

priyāvirahaduḥsahena =bahuvrīh – whose separation from a wife difficult to be borne

priyā = f. a mistress , wife

viraha = separation (m)

duḥsahena = mfn. difficult to be borne , unbearable

L 4:  तथा वरर्षभोग्येण संवत्सरमनुभाव्येन।

tathā  varṣabhogyeṇa saṃvatsaramanubhāvyena

thus to be endured for a year (i.e) a full year to suffer the consequence of one’s actions

      thus to be endured for a year (is) a year to be understood

tathā = thus

varṣabhogyeṇa =  varṣa + bhogyeṇa –inst  tatparuṣa to be endured for a year

varṣa = m. a year (commonly applied to age), rains- once a year

bhogya =  to be endured or suffered fpp √bhuj

saṃvatsaram = m. , s, acc –  a full year , a year

anubhāvyena = anu +bhū fpp, inst, s – mfn. perceiving , understanding

Note: strangely anu +bhuj  = to suffer the consequence of one’s actions  (instr. , s, m)

The instrumental fpp for that is would be – bhojānyena ?

Also I am really not sure how to express the instrumental nature of anubhāvyena

L 5:  किमिति तेनास्य शापो’दायितयाह ।

kimiti  tenāsya śāpo’dāyītyāha

why therefore a curse of this was given – thus it is said

kim iti   = why (pronoun)

tena = with/by him/this (inst, s, m) with that reason, therefore

asya = of this (m, s, gen)

śāpaḥ = √shap curse , malediction (m, s, nom)

adāyītyāha = adāyi iti āha

adāyi   = was given √dā (third, s, aorist )

iti = thus

āha = perf. 3. sg. of the defect. √1. ah to say , speak

L 5/6:  स्वाधिकारप्रमत्तो निजव्यापारावलिप्तः

svādhikārapramatto  nijavyāpārāvaliptaḥ

Neglectful of his duty to own government/master (i.e) blind to his own profession

svādhikārapramattaḥ = neglectful of his duty to own government/master

svādhikārāt =sva + ādhikārāt (abl,s, m) from self / one’s own + ruler/government `, master

pramattaḥ = pra + ppp √mad grossly neglectful of his duty (nom, s., m)

nijavyāpārāvaliptaḥ = (nom, s, m) blind to profession of one’s own country

nija =mf(aa)n. ( √ jan) 1. innate , native , of one’s own party or country,

vyāpāra =m. (ifc. f(aa).) occupation , employment , business , profession , function

avaliptaḥ= ppp? 1. proud , arrogant, 2. smeared (nom, s, m) 3. blind
